They say tiny houses are the next big thing, but what about tiny law offices?
“How is that going to work?” you may ask. And who are “they” anyway?
“They” are tiny house builders from a popular television show. They haven’t built a tiny law office, but you can buy one from Amazon for less than a Lexus.
Build It, but Will They Come?
Imagine a client walking into your repurposed storage container, because that’s what $36,00 will buy you. Unless you serve the construction industry, is that really a good look?
The tiny law office is a really more of a question than a building plan. Carolyn Elefant, the popular lawyer/blogger, just put it out there.
“What do you think?” she asks. “Do tiny offices have any potential for lawyers?”
Elefant says tiny offices would be great to set up on law school campuses or in the backyard for work-from-home parents. And when you can get one delivered with a kitchenette, toilet, shower and appliances, why not?
Zoning and Building Codes
Your 320-square foot law office may fit anywhere, just not everywhere. That’s because of zoning regulations and building codes.
Even in your own backyard, the city or homeowners’ association may have something to say about it. Some cities — like Fresno, California — have changed zoning laws to accommodate homes that share land with existing homes.
But commercial zoning laws are another thing. They typically don’t allow living in temporary structures, much less conducting business from a storage container in the financial district.
Unless, perhaps, you do construction law.
